Zeroing is not necessary in most cases. A bad node can frequently be repaired by Alsoft Disk Warrior (assuming your data is backed up). If your data isn't backed up, a bad node can often be read through by Prosoft Data Rescue.
If I didn't catch you in time to stop your zeroing, if installing the operating system you have difficulty with zeroing, then perhaps the drive has failed or its connector has failed. Be sure when you go to install to only install the operating system that came with the computer or a newer retail operating system.

Used to be you needed a copy of Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius (or maybe all three) in addition to Disk Utility to keep your hard drive happy. But is that still true?
Disk Genius For Mac
- IDefrag, Disk Warrior and Stellar Drive Defrag software each of has their own pros and cons. Though, I have used Stellar Drive Defrag and DiskWarrior and on the basics of my previous experience I am recommend you to use Stellar Drive Defrag over D.
- There are a number of Mac data recovery software that are perfect alternatives of DiskWarrior tool. They can repair a corrupted or damaged Apple Mac hard drive and also recovers deleted/lost files from the Mac drive or volume without any single digit change.
